Arrest in Sedwick Bullying Case

LAKELAND (970 WFLA) -- Two girls, ages 12 and 14, are under arrest and facing charges of aggravated stalking, in the death of Rebecca Sedwick.

The 12-year-old Lakeland girl took her own life after being subjected to intense bullying.

Sheriff Grady Judd says the 14-year-old Guadalupe Shaw and 12-year old Katelyn Roman are charged facing third degree felonies becauase Rebecca was only 12.  The suspects were released last night to their parents.

Judd says the arrests were made after Shaw posted this statement on her Facebook page:  "Yes I bullied Rebecca nd she killed her self but IDGF."

According to the sheriff's office affidavits, the girls harrassed Rebecca, who jumped to her death from a tower at an abandoned cement factory in Lakeland last month.

Judd says Shaw's boyfriend used to be Rebecca's boyfriend and Roman used to be best friends with Rebecca.  Other students told investigators Shaw and Roman would threaten to beat up Rebecca, called her names, intimidated her and even got into at least one physical fight.

Judd was particulary critical of the suspects' parents, saying even after Rebecca's death Shaw's parents continued to allow her to have a cell phone and access to a computer.  He hints that the parents could be charged in connection with the case.
